Ricardo "Rico" Carty was born September 1, 1939, and died November 23, 2024. One of the most feared hitters of his era, he spent most of his major league career with the Braves, helping Atlanta win its first National League West title in 1969.
In 1996 he was part of the first class inducted into the Caribbean Baseball Hall of Fame, and in 2023 he entered the Braves Hall of Fame.
At the 1977 Series, Carty carried the Tigres del Licey to a perfect 6-0 title. He hit five home runs, breaking the record of four set by Willard Brown in 1953, homered in four straight games, led the Series in runs (8) and RBI (10), and was named MVP. His 1.333 slugging percentage and 28 total bases are still single-Series records. Barry Jones of Puerto Rico tied the five-homer mark in 1990 at the Orange Bowl in Miami.
Four of Carty's five home runs came at the University Stadium in Caracas and one at Estadio José Bernardo Pérez. One of them came off Mike Krukow, a future major league starter.
