Rubén Gómez (1927 to 2004) was the first Puerto Rican to pitch in a World Series, winning Game 3 for the New York Giants in 1954 and becoming a hero at home.
He pitched 28 winter seasons with the Cangrejeros de Santurce and Vaqueros de Bayamón, setting Puerto Rican league records with 174 wins and a 2.97 ERA, and became the league's first pitcher to reach 1,000 strikeouts, finishing with 1,390.
Gómez shares the Caribbean Series records for wins (6) and complete games (5) with Camilo Pascual and José Bracho. The CBPC calls the complete-game mark one that looks out of reach in modern baseball.
Gómez debuted with Santurce in 1947 and was named the Puerto Rican league's Rookie of the Year. He led the league in wins three times, in 1949-50, 1951-52 and 1958-59.
